My bane.  I hate SL noses.  The sliders just don't behave how I want them to.

What is the Perfect Nose?

A nose shape makes sense and helps visually identify your avatar's:

  • personality
  • age
  • ethnicicty
Again, everyone has a different opinion on what is attractive.. but there are commonly accepted features that are accepted as being good looking.

What (Almost Universally) Looks Good:
1. Narrow nasal tip
2. Small dip between the slope of your nose (nasal dorsum) and the tip part -- this is the supra tip break often asked for in plastic surgery
3. Appropriate facial angles
4. Appropriate nose projection and width (depends on face)

FRONT VIEW

Horizontal Symmetry
* from left to right, divide the face as follows:
1. ear to outer corner of the left eye
2. width of left eye
3. inner corner of left eye to inner corner of right eye
4. width of right eye
5. outer corner of right eye to ear

If you have ideal symmetry, each part should be equal length.

from http://www.drrawnsley.com/rhinoplasty/your-perfect-nose.html

In SL you will have to toy with the sliders to achieve this including:
* Sliders in the Head tab (head stretch which pulls down or up the ears, head shape, egg head)
* Sliders in the Eyes tab
* Sliders in the Ear tab
* Sliders in the Nose tab

Vertical Symmetry
* from your hairline measure the distance from it to the best fit line through your eyebrows
* from your eyebrows to the bottom of your nose
* from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of your chin

If you have ideal symmetry all three parts above should be equal length.

SIDE VIEW (PROFILE)
The profile of the face has it's magic too:

* Frankfort Line: draw a line from that dent between your eyes above the nose (called a Glabella) to the tip of the chin.   Ideally this is perfectly vertical (90 degrees)
* Draw a line from the beginning of the bulby tip part of the nose to above your ear hole (auricular canal) just above the flappy bone bit outside of it (called tragus).  Ideally this line is perfectly horizontal (180 degrees)
* Draw a line from the top of your lip to the bottom of your ear.  Ideally this is perfectly horizontal.

Using these lines, we can visualize angles on the face that can be adjusted to create a more ideal profile. Ideal angular measurements include the following:

36 degrees IDEAL

130 degrees IDEAL

85 degrees IDEAL

120 degrees IDEAL
How to Measure In SL?
I used a free on-screen protractor to measure these angles:

Useful Tool For Your Nose Job:
http://osprotractor.sourceforge.net/Protractor.html

1. Take two readings as I did (this is not my real normal btw I changed it for this demo and the chin I pulled in)
reading is 210.13 which means the reading is 149.87 degrees (360-210.13)

338.27 which means angle is 21.73 degrees (360-338.27).
Taking the difference we get 149.87-21.73 = 128.14 degrees, which is in range of ideal -- pretty close to 130.  You can tweak the bridge heights to get better angles.
Remember:
1. These are guidelines
2. If you don't have these, doesn't mean you are not beautiful.

The Supra Tip Break

left = no supra tip break, right = yes supra tip break
The supra tip break is an elegant and attractive feature in a female nose. In the ideal female nose the tip projects slightly further forward than the supratip area.  This creates a feminine look and is an often requested nose job.
